Andrea Mejia, left, of Castaic, and Ryan Yamamoto, of Stevenson Ranch, pick a stray domestic mix kitten at the Cat Days of Summer pet-adoption event at the Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control’s Castaic Shelter.

The event was aimed at increasing the adoptions of homeless cats and dogs. Shelter officials hoped to place 500 pets today countywide during the adopt-a-thon.
