The doubles pairing of Valencia senior Anders Jansson, bottom, and freshman Joey Fernicola went 25-0 in the Foothill League and led the Vikings to a league title.

It was impressive enough to go undefeated in Foothill League competition, but to do it against teams stocked with talent was remarkable.

Yet Valencia senior Anders Jansson and freshman Joey Fernicola did it, going 25-0 as a pairing in league play. Once substitutions are factored in, Fernicola finished 30-0 as a member of various doubles teams.

But the freshman-senior combination were the ones that won the most important sets.

The team took down all of the league’s best doubles pairings, including the 6-4 defeat of West Ranch’s Evan Abbott and Kirill Lipa on April 12. That was Abbott and Lipa’s only loss of the season against a league opponent.

Jansson and Fernicola were also challenged later in the season when Lipa teamed up with Ryan Yoon, but they again came out on top 6-4 after falling behind earlier the in the set.

Another formidable pairing, West Ranch’s Brandon Lee and Wayne Moses, also fell to Jansson and Fernicola twice, as did Saugus’ top team of Chris Poursayadi and Grant Vaziri in closely contested sets.

That was a common theme throughout the year. Even facing a deficit and needing a break of serve, Valencia’s No. 1 doubles did what it had to do on its way to perfection.

Though both players complemented each other well, they proved themselves individually, too.

Fernicola went 64-8 overall this season as a doubles player and Jansson went 55-4.

In the Foothill League Individual tournament, Jansson teamed up with J.R. Macalutas and claimed the doubles championship.

In a twist of fate, Jansson’s team defeated his old teammate Fernicola and his partner, senior John Schmidt.

Just like everything else for the league’s best doubles team, Jansson and Fernicola were among the last players standing.
