Letter: Smyth’s college bill is a good idea

I totally agree that Cameron Smyth’s bill to help out college students who were turned away from attending due to budget cuts is a good one.

My son was one of them. He graduated from COC and then from CSUN.

He needed three classes to get into the nursing program, so he tried to go to COC but was turned away. We tried every junior college within 50 miles — same story.

Fortunately, we decided to check into colleges in Vermont and New York, as we own a home there and he could stay free of rent.

California is increasing the bill to $36 per credit. The students do not know how lucky they are. In Vermont and New York, each credit is $250, and for out-of-state students it is $450. We are paying the out-of-state bill of $450 per credit.

It is a shame when an American citizen who was born here cannot go to college in his home state.

I totally disagree that any student that is here illegally gets to go to our colleges at instate rates while my son could not. California needs to rethink its policy.
