2011 All-SCV Girls Swim Team: Just beginning

Hart's Nicole Antoniuk won two individual titles as a junior

Hart junior Nicole Antoniuk won Foothill League titles in the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle this season.

Shayla Austin - Senior, Canyon
The senior was one of only two Canyon girls to qualify for the championship finals in two events at the Foothill League meet. The catch was, she did it after recovering from a broken leg suffered before the season. She wound up fifth and sixth in deep 50 and 100 freestyle events, and she swam the anchor leg of the 200-medley and 200-freestyle relays.

Cassandra Kutra - Freshman, Golden Valley
As a sign of potential success in the years to come, Kutra set a new school record in the 100 butterfly this season with a time of 1:10.35. Only a freshman, Kutra could become a cornerstone for Golden Valley over the next few seasons.

Hayley Good - Senior, Hart
The senior co-captain won Foothill titles in three events this season, defending her championship in the 100-yard freestyle and as a member of the Indians’ 200- and 400-freestyle relays. Good finished her career with four consecutive league team titles by helping set a new Foothill record in the 200-freestyle relay (1:38.05) with Nicolette Barreiro, Bryana Waage and Sam Asencio.

Caitlin Baker - Sophomore, Saugus
The sophomore took second in the 100 breaststroke at the league finals last year, but the event was all her’s in 2011. Baker won the event in 1:07.97 and helped set a new school record in the 400-freestyle relay (3:45.15) alongside Katy Sonksen, Tara Olson and Kristin Threw. She was also a CIF-Southern Section Division I automatic qualifier in the 100 breaststroke.

Micaela Velasquez - Senior, Valencia
Velasquez was a pace-setter for the Vikings all season and successfully defended her Foothill League title in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.94, setting a new league record in the process. The UC Santa Barbara-bound senior was a CIF-Southern Section Division I finalist in the 100 and 200 freestyles for the Vikings, who finished second in league as a team.

Taylor Poliseno - Sophomore, West Ranch
Poliseno burst onto the scene last year as a freshman and took a giant leap forward as a sophomore. The sprinter was a CIF-Southern Section Division I finalist in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, having already won the Foothill League title in the 50 freestyle (24.12). It was the Wildcats’ first girls league championship in program history. She holds school records in the 50 freestyle (24.04) and 100 freestyle (52.15), both set at the CIF-SS Div. I finals.

There was only one girl that won two individual events at this season’s Foothill League swim finals.

And unfortunately for the rest of the league, she’s still got one more season.

Hart junior Nicole Antoniuk won individual titles in the 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle this year, leading the Indians to their 29th overall team championship.

It wasn’t just that she won the events, but how.

First came the 200 IM, an event that requires proficiency in all four strokes.

She won by about a second and a half over a field loaded with young talent.

Then there was the 500 freestyle.

Antoniuk was steady throughout and won the race in 4 minutes, 54.93, breaking a 25-year-old record in the process.
She could be placed anywhere and would excel.

It’s not hyperbole. It’s what she did.

With Megan Schultz, Nicolette Barreiro and her younger sister, Asia Antoniuk, Nicole helped win the 200-medly relay (1:50.73) at the league finals. She then teamed with Asia, Hayley Good and Sam Asencio to win the 400-freestyle relay in 3:33.16.

The two relays are the first and last events of the meet.

They provided fitting bookends to a day that was once again claimed by Hart.

Antoniuk then carried that same high level into the CIF-Southern Section Division I meet, finishing fourth in the 500 freestyle (4:55.98) and seventh in the 200 IM (2:07.36) against competition that was arguably the best in the state.

Antoniuk was calm and composed, almost feeding off the pressure whenever there was any.

Her achievements were many, as were her team’s.

And there will be more to come — starting now.

Antonuik is The Signal’s 2011 All-Santa Clarita Valley Girls Swimmer of the Year.

And the scariest part?

She’s is not done yet.

In fact, Antoniuk might just be getting warmed up.
