The Santa Clarita Chamber of Commerce has set up the Ian Gelig Memorial Scholarship Program. The program awards scholarships to veterans, or an immediate family member of a veteran, in pursuit of a higher education.

The application deadline is Friday June 17.

The memorial scholarship program was set up in honor of Sgt. Ian T.D. Gelig, an Army paratrooper, Stevenson Ranch resident and Hart graduate who was killed in Afghanistan March 2010.

Thousands of residents lined Santa Clarita city streets to honor the young veteran in a funeral procession organized by Fred Arnold.

Arnold, a local resident and businessman, along with the chamber leadership wanted to set up the scholarship fund as an ongoing tribute to Gelig.

Scholarships are intended to be used for the Fall 2011 semester and are renewable for up to eight semesters if the awardee maintains at least a 2.0 GPA and provides proof of continued registration.

Scholarship awards will be announced around July 4.
