Ashley Furniture Industries Inc. purchased the former Wickes furniture store building in Santa Clarita for $3.7 million, commercial real estate firm Lee & Associates announced Wednesday.

The new retail outlet store represents a growing presence in the region. Currently, the home store’s two closest locations are in Burbank and Palmdale.

“The property was only on the market for two or three months,” said Matthew Sullivan, managing director with Lee & Associates.

Ashley Furniture will anchor the 41,850-square-foot building at 26520 Carl Boyer Drive in the Centre Pointe Marketplace, putting the chain store in close proximity to Easy Life Furniture, as well as Simply Discount Furniture and Consumers Furniture Gallery, which has been operating in the Santa Clarita Valley since 1978.

Consumers Furniture has been doing business with Santa Clarita residents for more than 30 years, surviving the entrance and exits of other big retail furniture chain stores. Owner Greg Moser was not available for comment Wednesday afternoon.

Wickes closed all of its retail stores in 2008 after filing bankruptcy. Levitz Furniture of Stevenson Ranch closed around the same time after filing its third bankruptcy petition in a decade.

“We had a few offers, but Ashley Furniture was the most logical buyer. The company had already bought several former Wickes locations, and, obviously, the location and space was well-suited for a furniture retailer,” Sullivan said.

The Centre Pointe Marketplace retail shopping center is a 650,000-square-foot center whose tenants include Bank of America, Starbucks, Subway and Panda Express. Located within the Centre Pointe Business Park is a 1.6-million-square-foot complex of office and industrial buildings.

“Walmart, L.A. Fitness, Sam’s Club and Babies R Us are some of the adjacent retailers,” said Christine Deschaine, “so it is a trade area that is very beneficial to a store like Ashley Furniture.”

Deschaine, principal, and Stephanie Skrbin, associate of Lee & Associates — L.A. North/Ventura represented the seller, and Aaron Hodgdon of Hodgdon Group Realty Inc. represented the buyer.
