Inaugural Stars and Stripes Barbecue & Salsa Showdown will benefit 999 for Kids, Military Activation Committee, Fueled by the Fallen and Soldiers’ Angels. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 4 at Jack Bones Equestrian Center, 26983 Tapia Canyon Road, Castaic. Food, games, live music, craft vendors, a Kids’ Zone with pony rides, bounce house, dunk tank, slide and more.  Entry fee of $5 for adults, $3 for children 6 and under includes a barbecue card to allow tastings at each entrant’s booth. The Manga Club at Barnes & Noble in Valencia invites everyone interested in manga, comic books written and drawn in the Japanese style, to meet on the first Tuesday of the month in the community room at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 23630 Valencia Blvd., Valencia. Santa Clarita Elks Club will host the second annual Car Show and Chili Cookoff 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 11 at the Elks Lodge, 17766 Sierra Highway, Canyon Country. Moonlight Stroll. 7 p.m. at Ed Davis Park in Towsley Canyon, 24255 The Old Road, Newhall. Free. Parking $7. Wander the trails under a nearly full moon. Uncover which plants and animals are adapted to this transition time and maybe even see a few elusive nocturnal animals. Meet at Towsley Canyon’s front parking lot for this easy hike. Two hours. Program sponsored by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and presented by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority.

Gently used clothing needed
Wayman Cleaners is collecting gently used men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, shoes and accessories such as purses to distribute to the homeless and low-income populations in and around the SCV, clothes can be dropped off between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at Wayman Cleaners, 23120 Lyons Ave, Suite 15. Interior design disasters for HGTV
Homeowners in the Santa Clarita Valley are sought who have an interior decorating disaster. HGTV is now casting energetic, fun-spirited homeowners who want to remedy their failed decorating attempts. Friends and families of homeowners may also apply — if you think your friend/relative needs a decorating intervention. Homeowners: must have created a hideous room (that can be fixed cosmetically). Horrible color schemes, decorating “themes” gone wrong, “kitschy” becoming tacky. Loud designs welcome. Must have a family member or close friend who is troubled by the hideousness of the room. (Can be the homeowner him/herself.) Rooms that were decorated by the home’s previous owner will not be considered. Home must be within 60 miles of Los Angeles. Placerita Canyon Nature Center
Free family nature walk and native live animal presentation, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., every Saturday. California Sports Club meeting

Family outdoor movie night
The Foundation for Children’s Dental Health will host the second annual free Outdoor Family Movie Night presented by Advantage Disposal 7-10 p.m., Friday, June 3, at  Valencia Heritage Park, corner of McBean Parkway and Newhall Ranch Road in Valencia. Bring the family and a few blankets and enjoy the Dreamworks film “Megamind.” Enjoy a movie under the stars and raise funds for the Foundation for Children’s Dental Health. Pre-movie activities for the kids include face painting, crafts, raffle prizes, and more.  The “Snack Shack” will sell snacks. Shave It and other food vendors will be on hand to help raise funds. Purchase dinner and snacks at the event.

Grandparent/child advocates group
Advocates for Grandparent Grandchild Connection group meeting 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 4 at offices of Heart of The Canyons Church, 21618 Golden Triangle Road, Suite 106, Saugus 91350. A monthly group dedicated to reuniting grandparents and grandchildren.  It is comprised of grandparents, grandchildren, and parents united for the purpose to advocate for those children, to educate and bring into awareness, and support the grandparents who suffer from the loss of affection and contact with their grandchildren. Route 66 Classic Car Show
Spectators are free, and vehicle registration is $10 (donated to Safe Rides). Location: Route 66 Classic Grill, 18730 Soledad Canyon Road, Canyon Country. Help celebrate Safe Rides 25th year serving the SCV. Car Shows are held on the second Saturday of the month, May through October, 5-9 p.m. Spectators are free, and vehicle registration is $10 (donated to Safe Rides). Help Drive Away Hunger golf event
Help Drive Away Hunger – Monday, June 13 – golfers needed for the 25th annual Southland Regional Association of Realtors Santa Clarita Valley Division and the American Golf Foundation to benefit the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry, 7 a.m. at Vista Valencia Golf Course. Angel Food at United Methodist
The Angel Food program is for anyone who needs to stretch their grocery budget. The Bread of Life Signature box has enough food to feed a family of four for about a week and costs $35. Choose from 10 other options and order online with credit card at www.umcv.org by June 19 or fill out an order form at Valencia United Methodist Church by June 17 at 25718 McBean Parkway.
