Valencia waltzed its way through Foothill League play and the rest of the regular season.

The apt result — nearly every player on the team was honored in the 2011 All-Foothill League boys tennis teams.

Leading the way on the all-league singles team is junior J.R. Macalutas, who went 22-0 against Foothill opponents for the league champion Vikings.

“I felt really accomplished this year because Jason Ferlianto is really good,” Macalutas said of the second-best singles player this year from Canyon. “(West Ranch players) Baron Von Kessler, Harrison (Collins), all those guys.”

Collins (23-5) snagged the final spot on first-team singles while Von Kessler (23-7) was named to the second team.

During league play, Macalutas dominated most of his sets and was only forced to a tiebreaker once. It ended up being a 7-6 (7-1) win for Macalutas over Ferlianto during an April 21 match.

Other than that, the junior left most opponents in the dust, including an overall 6-0 record against the singles players of league-second place West Ranch.

“I’m pretty confident right now,” Macalutas said. “Playing in league is a good confidence booster.”

In doubles, the Vikings are even more highly represented, fielding two of the three first-team pairings.

Anders Jansson and Joey Fernicola led the way with their 30-0 record in league play, while sophomore teammates Cameron Braun and David Meyers also got the nod.

Jansson and Fernicola collected more wins that Macalutas because the two were never subbed out during a league match.
“I was feeling like going for it, and I didn’t want to be subbed out and I wanted to go 30-0,” Fernicola said.

Jansson, a senior, said he never doubted the abilities of Fernicola, a freshman, because he had seen him play in competitive matches before high school.

“I knew from the beginning he was going to be a good partner,” Jansson said.

Rounding out the first-team doubles honorees is West Ranch’s Evan Abbott and Kirill Lipa, who finished 17-1 in Foothill play.

For the singles first-teamers, Ferlianto went 33-2 in league sets, which included the sets the senior won to eventually claim an individual championship at the conclusion of the regular season.

Valencia and West Ranch cleaned up the second-team players in both singles and doubles.

The Vikings finished with a 10-0 record in league, ahead of the second-place Wildcats (8-2), but both teams exited in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division II playoffs.

For Valencia, senior Tayven Townsend and sophomore Chris Pope were named to the singles second team and the team of seniors, John Schmidt and Russell Del Rosario, represented the doubles side.

Senior Baron Von Kessler was the lone representative for the Wildcats for second-team singles, but two pairings, Brandon Lee and Wayne Moses along with Ali El Arabi and Ryan Yoon, were named on the doubles side.

Spencer Parks earned honorable mention for Foothill third-place Saugus, while Hart’s David Afework and Golden Valley’s Myles Moore were also named.
