John and Denise Turner, of Santa Clarita, are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Sarah Ashley Turner to Stephen Michael Shirey, of Fort Wayne, Ind.

The bride is the sister of Abby, Jared, and Drew Turner, all of Santa Clarita. She is the granddaughter of Roscoe Mahan, of Cookeville, Tenn.

The bride-elect was born in Atlanta, Ga., and moved to the Santa Clarita Valley in 2005. She is a 2009 graduate of William S. Hart High School in Newhall where she was a member of the Hart Regiment and Hart Orchestra playing both the flute and violin. She was in the National Honor Society and California Scholastic Federation, and also was a Girls’ State Finalist at Hart.
She is a member of Placerita Baptist Church, but currently attends Bridgeway Community Church in Bellbrook, Ohio, where she is the violinist. She is a junior attending Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio, majoring in psychology.

The groom-elect is the son of Carl and Debbie Shirey, of Fort Wayne, Ind. He is the brother of Matt and Shirey, of Baltimore, Md., and Chris Shirey of Fort Wayne, Ind. He is the grandson of Dave and Irene Gidley, of Cedarville, Ohio.

He is a 2007 graduate of Lakewood Park Christian School and a 2011 graduate with honors of Cedarville University with a major in physics and a minor in Bible and mathematics. He is employed by the Air Force Institute of Technology.

The couple first met in the fall semester of 2010. He was a lab assistant in the bride-elect’s physics class. They began dating a week after initially talking in class. It was love at first sight. He proposed shortly after attending his graduation ceremony, after dating for 7 1/2 months. They both plan to pursue their master’s degrees after the wedding.

The couple plan a church wedding ceremony in California in late May or early June of 2012. They plan to honeymoon in Hawaii and will reside in Cedarville, Ohio, until the bride-elect graduates in 2013.
