Kicking up heels at Canyon Theatre Guild

Raymond Castro will play Ren and Mary Grace Wilson will play Aerial in “Footloose” at the CTG.

The stage version of the musical "Footloose" will step it up at the Canyon Theatre Guild in Newhall starting this Saturday night, May 28.

The story concerns a newcomer from Chicago, moving into a small farming town. Ren (Raymond Castro) was prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he wasn't prepared for were the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing, instituted by the local preacher, Reverend Shaw Moore (Billy Davis).

The Reverend is determined to exercise a control over the town's youth that he cannot command in his own home.

When the Reverend's rebellious daughter Aerial (Mary Grace Wilson) sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid.

The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost, and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. To the rocking rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated top 40 score, and augmented with dynamic new songs for the stage musical, "Footloose" celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, and guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind.

"Footloose" opens on May 28 at 8 p.m., with 8 p.m. performances on June 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25. There will be 2 p.m. matinees on May 29, and June 5, 12, 18, 19 and 25. Tickets are $12 - $15 for juniors and seniors and $15 - $17 for adults. The Canyon Theatre Guild is located at 24242 Main Street in Old Town Newhall. The box office number is (661) 799-2702.
