Golfers and guests gathered on the terrace at Robinson Ranch Golf Clubhouse on Monday to cheer as four fellow golfers tried their luck at a $100,000 shoot-out contest to wrap up the sixth annual Zonta Golf Tournament.

The tournament was hosted by the Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley.

Robert McCarty, Jerry Miller, Ray Tippet and Mike Stiles were chosen in a random drawing from tournament Super Ticket holders to participate in the contest.

The contestants drew cheers from the crowd as their shots angled toward the pin. However, the cheers turned to collective groans as each successive ball veered into the rough or the nearby lake.

Miller and Stiles actually hit the green with their shots from 165 yards away, and missed the $100,000 cash prize for a hole-in-one in the shoot-out by only a few feet.

As the top two shoot-out contestants, they won a $50 and $100 cash consolation prize, respectively, donated by tournament sponsor Mike Berger.

John Heys’ team, consisting of Heys, Don Hinson and Doug Schiermeyer won trophies for Men’s Low Score.

It was the fifth consecutive year for Heys and his fellow golfers to capture the award.

Top Mixed Team award was presented to Ray Tippet, Steve Warford, Barbara Cochran and Russ Cochran.

Longest Drive winners were Sydney Davidson for the women, and Matt Lane for the men.

Davidson also won the women’s Closest to the Pin award, while John Heys won the men’s award.

Davidson returned to the podium with team members Chris Allen and Alan Block to claim the dubious award of Highest Scoring Team.

More than 40 players enjoyed perfect golf weather for the annual event, which is one of Zonta’s key fund-raising projects.

Proceeds will help support the club’s programs to improve the lives of women locally and around the world.

Zonta International is a worldwide service organization of executives in business.

Adele Macpherson and Sharon Langenbeck chaired this year’s tournament, along with Honorary Chairman Bob Kellar.

Tournament sponsor was the Berger Group at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney.

The Zonta Club of SCV meets on the  second Wednesday of each month at the Hilton Garden Inn, 27710 The Old Road, Valencia, 91355. For information, call (661) 252-9351.
