The Miss Santa Clarita Scholarship Program recently celebrated a first in its 31-year history — a mother-daughter duo was crowned as titleholders.

Debbie Haas, of Stevenson Ranch, was crowned Mrs. Santa Clarita Valley and her daughter, Celine Haas was crowned Miss Teen Santa Clarita Valley Princess.

Debbie Haas began her journey into the pageant run last year, and earned the title of Mrs. Santa Clarita Valley Princess.

“I am honored to have had the privilege to serve my community, and get to know it on a more personal level,” Debbie Haas said.

As a resident of the SCV for 23 years, Haas chose to raise her children in the area because of its family oriented community.

“There’s a lot of community involvement here, there are excellent schools, and clean, safe neighborhoods,” she said.

Haas, an elementary music teacher and private piano and voice instructor for more than 20 years, chose to enter the pageant because it gave her ample opportunities to be more involved in the community.

Followed by many hours of community service, she also took home the title of Superior Queen.

Inspired by her mother’s hard work and diligence, Celine Haas entered the 2011 pageant. Celine, an honor student Hart High School, is a member of the award-winning Hart High School show choir, and an avid equestrian.

“The pageant was an amazing experience,” said Celine. “We have the opportunity to represent out city and it really is an honor to be involved in community service.”

The mother-daughter duo was recently spotted taking photographs and mingling with fellow SCV residents at the annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration in downtown Newhall on Main Street.
