Amgen Tour of California races back to SCV

Residents should plan on minor traffic delays from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The record-setting Amgen Tour of California cycling road race returns to the city of Santa Clarita for a fourth time on Sunday, May 22.

The city will serve as the host of the Start Ceremonies for the final leg of the race at the Westfield Valencia Town Center, with activities happening from 10 a.m. to noon.

"With 66 miles of off-street trails and a vibrant cycling community, Santa Clarita prides itself on health and wellness within the City," said Mayor Marsha McLean.

"Keeping in theme with the city's dedication toward healthy living, the Amgen Tour of California is a family-friendly event that promotes cycling, offers world-class competition and is completely free and open to the public."

Considered cycling's most successful stage race in the United States and one of the world's most respected cycling races in the world, the Amgen Tour of California provides a unique fan experience as many of the world's top riders will be available for autographs and pictures prior to opening ceremonies.

Santa Clarita spectators can also expect fun activities for the whole family from 10 a.m. to noon, including tricycle races, where competitors of all ages will battle along Town Center Drive.

Interested participants can sign up at the Amgen Tour of California Stage 8 start line.

Additionally, opening ceremonies will feature dignitaries, a performance of the National Anthem by a local teen and entertainers from Six Flags Magic Mountain. All the action leads up to the exciting buildup to the start of the race itself where riders sign in and are interviewed.

With the arrival of the world's top cyclists in the Amgen Tour of California, residents should plan on traffic delays from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on select local streets within the city to accommodate this world class event. These areas also comprise of the best viewing places to watch the Amgen Tour of California in action as it races through the city.

The public can expect minor delays on the following roads: McBean Parkway (between Valencia Boulevard and Newhall Ranch Road) and Newhall Ranch Road to Highway 126.

Road closures include:
* Town Center Drive, from Theater Drive to the round-a-bout will be closed from 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 22.
* Town Center Drive from Theater Drive to McBean Parkway will be closed from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 22.

Rolling road closures between McBean Parkway and Newhall Ranch Road will begin at noon as cyclists make their way out of Santa Clarita. Once the bicycle procession passes, roads will be opened.

Riders will travel:
* Northbound on McBean Parkway from Town Center Drive to Newhall Ranch Road
* Westbound Newhall Ranch Road to Highway 126
