Letter: We must support our local public schools

I appreciated Wes Storch’s May 8 column, “Public schools are an asset to the SCV,” supporting our fine public schools in Santa Clarita.

As a parent and concerned citizen, I am urging my friends and neighbors to call their legislators this week at (888) 268-4334 and ask them to pass a budget that includes tax extensions to protect our schools.

As parents, we can no longer hope that this problem is going to go away. The superintendent of public instruction, Tom Torlakson, declared a state of financial emergency in California’s schools, urging Californians to come to the aid of schools across the state.

Over the past few years our kid’s class sizes have grown, and their education has suffered. Many extracurricular activities have been eliminated, and school days have been canceled. Their teachers are being asked to do more and more with less and less.

Can you imagine going to work every day and being asked to continually take pay cuts for working harder? I am not a teacher or member of the CTA. I love and appreciate teachers.

Our economic future depends on our kids. We need to stop robbing the innocent, and as parents we need to stand up and fight for our kids.

Go to the California Teachers Association’s website at www.castateofemergency.com for ways to voice support for our schools and the future of California.

I am a parent who wants the best education for our children, and I don’t want any more money cut from their education. I would like for them to be able to afford and attend quality California schools that I help support with my taxes.
