The name of this family is being kept confidential to protect them from possible retribution from the children’s father.

An indigent 25-year-old single mother in Santa Clarita is in a situation unfathomable by many in our community.

She has four children under the age of 8 (two of them under age 3) and has been abandoned completely by the children’s father, leaving her in a desperate situation, unable to work because of the price of day care.

The family of five is living in a small apartment with no furniture. They have no transportation, and even the cost of taking the bus to go to doctor appointments and the like is prohibitive.

The young mother has no extended family or friends to help her out. They rely on the SCV Food Pantry for food, and they thank God for those who give them food.

To add to this mother’s tragedy, the youngest child, just 18 months old, has severe mental retardation and Down syndrome.

Because of this, they do qualify for minimal benefits through Social Security, and this pays their rent.

This brave mother is doing all that she can to keep her family together, but she is understandably depressed and lives in fear. The SCV Helping Hand donation would supply this family with a few months of extra food and a few items of clothing for these growing children.

A note from The Signal’s SCV Helping Hand Committee: This case spoke to our hearts, and seems to us the epitome of the situation for which this fund was created by its generous benefactor. Accordingly, we have doubled the maximum award for this mother. Child & Family Services officials assure us the money will be multiplied in its use.

If you are touched by this mother’s plight as we were, we invite you to join us in offering her a helping hand.
You can send a donation earmarked for her to: Child & Family Center, 21545 Centre Pointe Parkway, Santa Clarita, CA 91350. Put “Helping Hand family” in the memo field. You can donate online by visiting http://www.childfamilycenter.org/giving_donations.php.

If you can donate a crib mattress in good shape; bedding for a crib, king-size bed or a twin-sized bed; a refrigerator or dresser in good condition; or blankets or pots and pans, please contact the Child & Family Center at (661) 259-9439.
