Gary Hortons humorous column Wednesday, about highway rest stops (“No Rest for the Weary”) used all the usual Democrat/liberal talking points to promote the idea of again raising taxes here in California, claiming that Jerry Browns proposed cuts have paired everything to the bone.

As always when Democrats say that, there are a couple of budget-busting areas that somehow seem sacrosanct, and are always missing from their discussions.

The first, of course, is the outrageous benefits paid to state workers. Early retirement followed by lifetime benefits, including essentially free healthcare until death.

I dont know of anyone in the private sector who gets such a golden retirement. Browns latest effort to address the problem? A new contract for prison guards significantly upping their golden parachute.

The other budget-buster is the cost to this state of a massive population of illegal aliens. Apologists claim that its a federal problem the state cant address, but thats just a subterfuge.

In reality, the state could, indeed, take steps to address the problem as weve seen Arizona and several other states do.

Illegal aliens in this state cost us tens of billions of dollars in misdirected revenues, infrastructure costs, healthcare expenditures, on and on and on. Eliminating these costs alone would cure any current budget shortfall.

The latest effort by the Sacramento Democrats? Passage of the California DREAM Act, which will grant illegal aliens reduced tuition and preferential treatment at state colleges and universities, costing the taxpayers of the state even more money during this time of economic distress.

Then they turn around and ask the voters  the very people stuck with the bills for these harebrained policies  to vote to tax ourselves even more than we now pay in this state with tax rates that are already among the highest in the nation.
They must really think were either blind or incredibly stupid.
