Hart boys volleyball would have had to play nearly perfect to beat the top seed in the CIF-Southern Section Division II playoffs.

It only took a few miscues to cripple the Indians, who lost 3-0 to Corona del Mar of Newport Beach in the second-round match on Thursday at Corona del Mar High School.

CDM pulled away late in each game, winning 25-17, 25-20 and 25-16.

"We were pretty pumped coming in, it was just some nervous jitters and some of my veterans didn't play as well as they could have," said Hart head coach Mary Keen.

Mainly, Hart (25-9) didn't get the job done at the net against the talented Corona hitters.

As the night went on, the No. 1-seeded Sea Kings (26-4) figured out how to attack Hart's weaknesses on defense.

"They did a great job of spreading out their offense and attacking our smaller blockers," Keen said.

On the strong side for Hart were seniors J.J. Mosolf and Taylor Gregory, who had 11 and eight kills respectively.

Gregory had a team-high three blocks.

After falling behind 6-1 in the first game, the Indians rallied back to within a point and maintained that stance until the final stretch.

Then the errors started flying in, and the Sea Kings pulled away.

"It almost seemed like when we got to about 15, it would be 15-17 or 15-18, we would climb a few more points and (CDM) would just close it out," Keen said.

On the serving side, Hart committed just one error in the first two games, but missed five serves in the final game, spelling an end to the match and the season.

Hart setter Chris Leclair tallied 27 assists.

Both Mosolf and Gregory finished off their third seasons as varsity players.

"What they did for this year was they provided better direction for our program because they got a lot of club kids to come in," Keen said. "It's going to continue to make us better in the future."
