CIF volleyball: Tough draw strikes Grizzlies

G.V. eliminated in the first round

Golden Valley boys volleyball coach Jeff Cody didn’t spend too much time being frustrated.

He made sure to put things in perspective despite the fact that his team had just lost 3-1 to Trabuco Hills of Mission Viejo in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division II playoffs on Tuesday at Trabuco Hills High School.

“This draw that we had was a good draw for us, and obviously we would have liked it to have ended differently,” Cody said of loss, which came by scores of 25-15, 22-25, 26-28 and 25-21. “But it’s OK. Two years in a row going to the playoffs, that’s fine with me.”

Last year, the Grizzlies (16-12) made their playoff appearance in school history. Now, Cody says the program has some momentum to build on.

Unfortunately, that momentum wasn’t enough to carry the Grizzlies past the Sea View League’s top finisher in Trabuco Hills (20-5).

Early in the match, Golden Valley struggled dealing with the riled-up crowd and the magnitude of the task at hand.

The mistakes became more costly as the night went on — particularly service errors.

“It was a little frustrating in the sense that we kind of beat ourselves and didn’t make them beat us,” Cody said of the team’s 14 missed serves.

In the second game, the Grizzlies’ crisp passing and the powerful hitting of seniors Alec Schlossman and Ryan Kessler evened the match at one game apiece.

Schlossman led with 16 kills and Kessler had 12.

The third game was the backbreaker for Golden Valley, Cody said, as the team failed to take advantage of a game-point situation when leading 24-23.

The Mustangs tied it up off a Golden Valley service error, then won the game on another botched serve.

After that, the Grizzlies couldn’t regain the momentum, and couldn’t stop Trabuco Hills’ outside hitter, Beau Osborne.

For Golden Valley, Colton Korne blocked six shots and assisted 38 points while libero Ryan Holcombe had nine digs.

Of 12 players on the roster, Golden Valley graduates nine seniors this year.

“I’m just proud of our guys for playing good fundamental volleyball and doing all the small things right,” Cody said
