West Ranch singles tennis player Gavelyn Poonnopatam was behind her Golden Valley opponent, 4-0, at West Ranch High in Stevenson Ranch.

The Wildcats' No. 2 player was two points away from losing her Foothill League match.

Then Poonnopatam made her move. She won a couple points to trail 5-2, with match point staring her in the face.

A few baseline forehands later, a few broken serves here and a couple of aces there, and she won, 7-5.

West Ranch beat Golden Valley 17-1, and Poonnopatam provided no other such drama in winning both her other matches by 6-0 scores.

"She did all the right things at the right times to make her right comeback," West Ranch Eric Spiecker said. "She did great. Everybody did well."

Poonnopatam's younger sister, Lena, also won two matches by 6-0 scores. She also won her first one, 6-4.

Wildcat No. 1 singles player Ana Lucia Fuentes won both her matches by 6-0 scores.

Golden Valley's lone victory came off the rackets of doubles players Anni Barkasian and Jami Rosen.

West Ranch No. 1 doubles team True O'Neill and Mallory Martin won their matches, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1.

Jennifer Hill and Carla Echevarria also won their doubles match, 6-3, 6-2.

Both teams' next matches are at 3 p.m. Tuesday. West Ranch will play at Canyon, Golden Valley will play at Hart.
