Hart girls volleyball player Rachel Richan makes a successful kill on Thursday in a match at Valencia High School.

At the volleyball match on Thursday night, the Valencia Vikings kept the lead against the Hart Indians in all three sets, 25-19, 25-15, 25-15.

"The match tonight was very good," said Valencia Coach Ray Sanchez, "We did a great team effort today. I'm very happy."

It was the Foothill League opener for both teams.

The leading Viking players were outside hitter Shelby Leduff with 14 kills, outside hitter Katie Hank with 10 kills, and setter Christina Worth with three aces.

"For our first league game, it came out with nervous hitters," said Hart head coach Mary Krisan, "Not quite instinct, but it was difficult having a really short offense so if was new for us to have hitters hitting over our blockers."

Krisan explained that she was running a new rotation for the team.

"We switched the players around, and it didn't work out well. There were some miscommunication and unsettlement within the players."

Hart's kill leader, setter and opposite hitter Casey David, had seven kills.

Middle hitter Breena Beckett and outside hitter Brittani Elser had four kills each. Beckett also had four blocks.

"Overall the hitting was more consistent," Krisan said. "Our strong defense let up the match."

"I couldn't have asked for a better match," Sanchez added.

Valencia improved to 5-6, while Hart is 3-5.

The Hart Indians will next take on Golden Valley at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Valencia will play Saugus at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

Valencia lost to Hart in the junior varsity match. The Vikings' freshman team lost.
