Barry Pontius, Robert Hayis and Randy Sain converse during their golf game at Robinson Ranch Country Club golf course for the 2010 J.R.’s Comedy Club Celebrity Golf Classic last May.

Local residents looking for a laugh and a way to raise money for the Santa Clarita Valley’s only homeless shelter can now participate in two upcoming benefits.

The Humor Helps comedy fundraiser on Sunday, May 15 is a family-friendly event with comedy talent provided by J.R.’s Comedy Club in Valencia.

Comedians scheduled to perform include Don Friesen, two-time winner of the San Francisco Comedy Competition; Phil Perrier, a writer for “The Tonight Show”; and Frank Lucero, who has starred on “Comics Unleashed,” “Que Loco” and HBO.

Humor Helps will take place at 3:30 p.m. May 15 at Blessed Kateri’s Slattery Hall, 22508 Copper Hill Drive. Tickets cost $15 and may be purchased at, at the door, or by calling Esmeralda at (661) 607-5418.

On May 23, the Santa Clarita Valley Emergency Winter Shelter and J.R.’s Comedy Club will host the Celebrity Golf Classic at 10 a.m. at Robinson Ranch. Each golf foursome will have a renowned comedian playing with their group.

Following golf, the classic will continue with dinner, a silent auction, entertainment, awards and door prizes.

Some of the celebrity comedians expected to attend are Bob Hays, Jamie Alcroft, Randy Lubas, Conrad Lawrence, Don McMillan, Jackie Flynn, Don Friesen and Mark Eddie.

Golf Classic tickets can be purchased online at or by calling David Hartmire at (661) 799-7940.

The shelter offers a refuge of security, warm meals, clothing, medical help and job/housing resources for SCV's homeless during the winter..This past season the shelter served 203 individuals and 30 families including 40 children.

"We are only able to offer help to so many of the SCV's homeless because of the community's support of our shelter," said Executive Director Tim Davis. "We want to provide our supporters with fun and humorous options for helping the homeless. We hope everyone will pick one or both events to attend. Funds raised allow us to continue bringing hope to our neighbors in deepest need."
