Members of the Santa Clarita Valley Rotary Club and Elks Lodge will dedicate a plaque next week to U.S. Army Spc. Rudy A. Acosta who was killed while serving in Afghanistan in March, according to a statement released Monday.

A ceremony and luncheon is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. May 11 in the Rotary Garden located near the Santa Clarita Sports Complex at 20870 Centre Pointe Parkway.

A plaque with Acosta’s name will be placed in the Rotary Garden alongside the names of 10 other military personnel from the Santa Clarita Valley who have died since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began.

Acosta, a combat medic, was killed March 19 in the Kandahar province of Afghanistan when a military security contractor hired by the military allegedly started shooting at soldiers.

Another soldier, Cpl. Donald R. Mickler Jr., 29, of Ohio, was also killed and four other soldiers were injured, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Defense.

Those already memorialized in the Rotary Garden include: Brian Cody Prosser; Stephen E. Wyatt; Richard P. Slocum; Cole W. Larsen; Jose Ricardo Flores-Mejia; Dennis L. Sellen Jr.; Stephen E. Colley; John M. Conant; Sgt. Ian Timothy D. Gelig, and Jake W. Suter.

Tickets to the luncheon cost $20 per person. To place reservations, call (661) 251-5086.
