Caltrans held a memorial Thursday for workers killed on the job. During the department’s 21st annual Workers Memorial, 175 workers were honored Thursday in Sacramento.

“Every day, highway workers put their lives in danger just by going to work,” said Caltrans Director Cindy McKim. “This memorial reminds us that we all must do our part to keep our state’s highways safe by slowing down in work zones.”

Caltrans and the California Transportation Foundation also developed two new funds that would benefit the families of Caltrans workers killed on the job. The Fallen Workers Assistance Memorial will help with the initial needs of surviving families. Next year, children of lost workers can apply for the Fallen Workers Children’s Scholarship.
