Letter: Obama not living up to expectations

Kudos to John Zaring for presenting a most persuasive argument in favor of achievements of the Democrats in the last few decades (“GOP rhetoric could use a history lesson,” April 26).

He reminds us that under President Ronald Reagan, top earners hit an all-time low of 27 percent for taxes, with the national debt tripling as a result. And when Clinton took over and raised taxes for the wealthiest, unemployment dropped to 4 percent.

At the end of the Clinton years, we had a national surplus of $237 billion. Sounds pretty good compared to our current national debt of more than $14 trillion and climbing.

Kind of makes a middle-of-the-road independent like me sympathize with the left wing.

On the other hand, an email from a right-wing friend tells me that since Obama and the Democrats took over, things have gotten much worse.

Looking at January 2009 figures compared to January 2011, according to her email, gasoline has gone from $1.79 a gallon to $3.59 (try to find that price now). Unemployment has risen from 7.6 percent to 9.4 percent. Those receiving food stamps have grown from 31,983,716 to 43,200,878.

And most alarming, our national debt has skyrocketed from $10.627 trillion to $14.278 trillion.

Kind of makes a middle-of-the-road independent like me sympathize with the right wing.

Bottom line: I didn’t like George Bush, Dick Cheney, Halliburton and those unnecessary wars. And now I don’t like the Democrats, Obama and our rapid move toward socialism.

It’s enough to keep a guy awake late at night.
