Kevin Smith has been promoted to director of creative and digital interactive at The Signal. The promotion, effective immediately, was announced Thursday by Signal Publisher Ian Lamont.

Smith will now oversee all Web, online, target marketing, interactive platforms, social media and other nonprint projects for The Signal, in addition to creative services. Prior to his promotion, Smith served as manager of the Creative Services department, overseeing a four-person team of graphic artists.

Under Smith’s leadership, responsibilities of the Creative Services team grew from supporting advertisers, marketing for The Signal and designing graphics for news and feature stories; to include designing, and managing production of all niche publications published by The Signal.

Smith’s creative team set new standards, designing highly creative graphics for the covers and pages for the SCV Business Journal, Parent Times, the Health & Wellness publication and the weekly Escape magazine — branding each publication with a distinct product identity.

“Kevin’s promotion has been well-earned,” Lamont said. “Since coming to The Signal a year ago, Kevin’s leadership greatly impacted the overall performance and quality of work being done by all in Creative Services.”

Prior to joining The Signal in April 2010, Smith spent seven years in production and graphics for two media companies, spending the most time with the Family Magazine Group. His passion has always focused on graphic design and the fast-evolving technology surrounding creation, design and marketing.

“It is a joy to be working with such an innovative team and company,” Smith said. “This past year has seen The Signal go through a lot of changes, and there are even more changes to come.”

In his new role as director of creative services and digital interactive, Smith will work closely with Lamont, Administrative Director Morris Thomas and Technology Director Joe Choo on all Web and interactive initiatives at The Signal.

Smith feels privileged to be at the very center of future changes made by The Signal, and said he is looking forward to growing the newspaper’s digital platforms and interactive footprint while continuing to raise the performance bar in creative services.

“I am excited about the opportunities of my new position and responsibilities, including the challenge to have an integral role in determining our future,” Smith said.

Smith’s promotion makes him a member of The Signal’s senior management and operational team.

“This past year was full of challenges for all SCV businesses,” Lamont said. “But I am proud of — and say thank you to — all 80 employees at The Signal. We are a different and stronger company now, and we have even more exciting plans for the rest of this year, and 2012. This is an extraordinary time to be at The Signal.”

Smith in 2004 received his B.A. in graphic design from California State University, Northridge, and his associate’s degree in fine art from College of the Canyons in 2000.  He is a 1998 graduate of Saugus High School and has lived in the Santa Clarita Valley since 1991. Smith and his wife, Danette, have a daughter and are expecting their second child in November.
