A drunken woman was pepper-sprayed and arrested in Saugus after she allegedly spit on the back of a deputy’s head, authorities said Thursday.

The woman, 27, was yelling at pedestrians Wednesday while lying on the sidewalk near an empty bottle of vodka at the intersection of Drayton Street and Railroad Avenue, and was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public, Lt. Brenda Cambra of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said in an email.

While the woman was being transported in a sheriff’s cruiser, she allegedly spat onto the back of a deputy’s head. When she attempted to spit at the deputy again, she was pepper-sprayed. The woman was being held Thursday on $20,000 on suspicion of battery on a police officer and drunk in public, according to arrest records.
