Six weeks ago, my gym, Results Fitness, launched its second annual New Year, New You Transformation contest open to all of the Santa Clarita Valley.

The $5,000 grand prize was to be awarded to the winning team and we set a goal to help this community lose more than 1,000 pounds of fat.

On Jan. 27, a kick-off seminar was held at our Newhall location, where nutrition information and exercise strategies were shared to help participants start this challenge with the knowledge and tools they needed to be successful.

The challenge criteria started with a $50 or higher entrance fee, whether the participants wanted to take advantage of Results Fitness and join for the six weeks or if they wanted to do their own program elsewhere. Anything was allowed.

The only rule was that participants had to have a team of five people, and the winners would be the team that lost the most fat weight.

On April 7, Results Fitness awarded a $5,000 check to the Lord of the Onion Rings team composed of Amy Grant, Hector Quinonez, Jessica Johnson, Sem Martinez and Anders Lindborg, who cumulatively lost more than 100 pounds of fat.

The winning team was led by Results Fitness member Amy Grant, who had been with the gym for a few months, and had already lost two jean sizes by following the Results Fitness philosophies.

Grant started this contest off in great shape with a low level of body fat. She recruited four of her friends who were not members of Results Fitness, but who she knew would be up for the challenge.

Over the six weeks, all five members of the winning team worked out consistently, filled out the nutrition journal given to them and followed everything the coaches told them to do to a “T.”

They attended the group fitness classes as a team, plus two team members chose to work with a Results Fitness coach. 
“I drank the proverbial Kool-Aid, and did everything exactly as the team at Results Fitness told me to,” Quinonez said. “I did not stray from the plan at all.”

Quinonez dropped the most weight as an individual of anyone in the contest, losing 28 pounds of fat in six weeks.

Results Fitness offers this contest as a team event to present one of the core values of the company — to “Be we, not me.” Having a team supporting you and keeping you accountable will guarantee better results than if you try to lose weight on your own.

In addition to teams, the other difference with this transformation contest was that it was truly a challenge based on pounds of fat lost, and not based on pounds of weight lost.

The starting weigh-ins were done on a very high-caliber body-fat-testing machine called the “Inbody,” which displays exactly how many pounds of fat, how many pounds of muscle and how many pounds of water are in your body.

There were three weigh-ins throughout the contest, and the only important number was how many pounds of fat was lost, not how many pounds on the scale.

If a team lost more weight, but they lost muscle, they would not be rewarded.

The amazing part of this contest wasn’t the winning team getting a $5,000 check, but the number of people who got motivated to make changes in their lives and start exercising consistently, eating healthy and taking care of themselves.

The participants on the second place team, a family who joined together and lost a total of 89.5 pounds of fat, said this contest was a huge catalyst for their entire family to change their lives.

In the end, it wasn’t about the money, it was about 180 people changing their lives and together losing more than 1,000 pounds of fat to make a healthier SCV.
