Hart, Valencia on collision course

Valenica 13, West Ranch 5

Valencia defeated West Ranch on Thursday afternoon, 13-5 to move to 2-0 on the season.

The Vikings top singles and Foothill League champion Isabella Fraczek swept Ana Lucia Fuentes, Gavelyn Poonnopatam and Lena Poonnopatam, respectively, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, while No. 2 Valenicia player, Thalia Wilczynski added another two sets, 6-0, 6-1.

On the doubles side, Emily Fraczek and Amanda Jansson swept 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 their West Ranch opponents, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, while the second-seeded duo, Clarice Fraczek and Eunice Pack also won in three straight, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1.

Hart 11, Saugus 7
The Hart Indians beat Saugus on Thursday afternoon, 11-7, behind a sweep by singles players Anne Susdorf and Shelly Sachdeva.

Also leading the Indians were the doubles team of Stacy Waung and Jessica Martinez, who swept their opponents, and the team of Ingrid Jelderks and Emily Van Houdt, who won two sets.

Hart is now 2-0 in league but will not play until meeting Valencia next Thursday.

Valencia 10, La Canada 8

Valencia, playing one of the toughest nonleague schedules in the Foothill League, beat La Canada on Friday at La Canada High, 10-8.

The highlight of the day was in the No. 1 singles match when Isabella Fraczek pulled off a come-from-behind victory over Rachel Fox, 7-6 (7-1). She also downed Camille Dunn and Seren Lu by scores of 6-0 and 6-1, respectively.

Thalia Wilczynski, who was out for the past week, returned with a bang, winning her last two sets 6-1 and 6-3, after losing her first set, 2-6, while Shin Jae Kim added two more singles set wins: 0-6, 2-6, 6-3.

In doubles, the Vikings won four sets. Emily Fraczek and Amanda Jansson took two out of three, 6-2, 6-0. Clarice Fraczek and Eunice Pack won two as well: 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Prep Cross Country
Saugus takes first league meet

The Centurions boys added another cross country feather to their caps by capturing the first Foothill League match of 2008 on Thursday afternoon.

The top five finishers were Brandon Jauregui (Saugus, 15:42), Alec Nelson (Saugus, 15:43), Seth Totten (Golden Valley, 15:51), Anthony Pizzo (Canyon, 15:55) and Falco Digiallonardo (Valencia, 16:20).

The teams finished in this order: Saugus, Valencia, Golden Valley, Canyon, Hart and West Ranch.

On the girls side, Saugus finished first, followed by West Ranch, Canyon, Hart, Golden Valley and Valencia.

Varsity Football
Bray won't play

Canyon running back Antonio Bray has been declared ineligible to play football during the 2008 season due to residency questions.

The decision was announced by Canyon High Athletic Director Marlene Holoman.

Bray attended Canyon as a freshman and played on the JV squad, but transferred last year to Alemany High before coming back to the Cowboys.

Alemany 38, Saugus 12

Santa Clarita resident Major Armsted (Canyon Country), rushed for two touchdowns as the Bishop Alemany freshmen (2-0-1) defeated Saugus, 38-12, Thursday afternoon at Alemany.

The Warriors' quarterback, Cody Thompson, threw two touchdowns to Cory Sims, 42 and 26 yards. Richie Ortiz ran for another touchdown. Alemany finished the half with a 27-yard field goal by John Sanchez.

The Warrior defense was led by middle linebacker Pablo Torres, and defensive linemen Derek Dukel and Kyle Crossly (all from Castaic).
