Hospital expansion must fit Valencia dream

The issue of the expansion of the Henry Mayo (Newhall Memorial) Hospital campus and its “master plan” will soon be presented for City Council approval. There are serious questions as to the impartiality of certain council members with regard to this action. I have always believed in the integrity of the individuals that are elected to represent the best interests of their constituents, but I recognize that often misinformation, misrepresentation and misguided values can also blind common sense.

The issue in question is to allow the expansion of the hospital. The solution presented is to allow the expansion upon condition of building of commercial medical office buildings in a residential area on non-profit land. The council has been presented with a “take it or leave it” choice. The truth is that the medical offices are not needed for the additional operating rooms or the neonatal care, but only for the profitability of G&L Realty.

To say that there is insufficient medical office space within a mile radius is ludicrous. Just drive down Lyons or Tournament Road and see the facilities that are available. Even the existing G&L property sports a “for lease” sign.

But then, I can understand Mr. Seaver’s motivation. If he can have G&L provide the parking structures, then that is less (construction) Henry Mayo needs to finance.

And of course if he gets the “master plan” approved, there is also his bonus.

If indeed this is the only hospital in the area and there is no competition, how difficult should it be to get the financing for expansion?

So, what will you do? Approve the “master plan” under the guise of, “We need health care for the Santa Clarita Valley”? Or say present us with a hospital expansion plan that fits into the neighborhood and preserves the Valencia Dream and the integrity of the city of Santa Clarita?
