Health insurance is so hard to find

Trying to obtain health insurance for a family is a joke! I recently quit my job with the county to take care of five teenagers and help my husband with his business.

We used to have health coverage through the county. I have since applied with every health care company there is. We have been rejected for the stupidest things.

Now, keep in mind, I have a large family. All of us together have been to the doctors maybe 10 times in the past 10 years. None of us has ever been hospitalized.

We have paid thousands of dollars to this industry and most certainly have not abused the system. We don't run the kids to the doctors for every little thing.

I am one of the few who can and has afforded the high prices of health care for the "just in case." What on earth is going on?

My husband is 51 and just had a physical. He has no high blood pressure, no high cholesterol. His heart is healthy. He had a skin tag removed just for precaution, and wow, now he got rejected for health insurance.

My 16-year-old, perfectly healthy son was take to the doctor to have his back checked because he was injured playing baseball and the coach wanted to make sure it was OK before he played again. The doctor said he could go to physical therapy if it would help. He never went.

He has been fine and never returned to the doctor for his back. Healthnet rejected me for this.
I, at age 40, had my physical. No high blood pressure (until I open another rejection letter), no high cholesterol. Heart is healthy.

And wow, was rejected for a goiter that I never was treated for or had. Their excuse was that the doctor probably typed in the wrong code when she ordered my blood work. They wanted me to go to the doctor, whom I can't see because it is not an "emergency," and have her write a letter.

Wow! In the meantime, I am dealing with a ticking time bomb here. We are on COBRA. If anything were to happen, I mean really happen, then we couldn't get insurance, right?

I am happy to say that Kaiser is our new carrier. Did I have a choice? I had a conversation with the lady who was helping me with my questions at Kaiser. She said that they have been swamped with new applications. They can't even keep up.

So many people are being laid off and need coverage. They can't get insurance through other companies. Is this the new universal health care we will have? Kaiser? Makes me think so.

It only took me three weeks to get coverage. I now won't have to worry and have sleepless nights thinking if one of us had a tragedy, it could bankrupt us.

And I won't have to depend on taxpayers like me to pay my bill because I have health insurance for my perfectly healthy family. And to think how many get it for free!
