Letter: City should hang banners for troops

I am a long-time resident of Santa Clarita Valley, and I am wondering why we do not do more to honor our local fallen soldiers.

I have been researching this and have found several other cities in California that are not only honoring their deceased local soldiers, but ones who are currently serving our country as well. For example, Burbank, Laguna Hills, Pico Rivera, Fontana and Pomona are just a few.

Just this past week, Spc. Rudy A. Acosta, 19, from Canyon Country, was killed while serving as a medic in Afghanistan. Last June, Pfc. Jake W. Suter, 18, from Stevenson Ranch, was killed while serving in Afghanistan. Last March, Sgt. Ian T.D. Gelig, also from Stevenson Ranch, was killed in Afghanistan.

It is my opinion that at the very least we can do as a community is acknowledge and honor our local servicemen and servicewomen who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

We could do so by having banners made in their honor.

How do we go about putting this into action for Santa Clarita?
