A parolee from Newhall who was driving a stolen car was arrested near Canyon High School on Monday after he ran from deputies, authorities said.

Deputies tried to perform a traffic stop near the intersection of Camp Plenty Road and Rosemond Drive at 2:45 p.m. after checking the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu’s license plate number and finding the car had been reported stolen, said Sgt. Brian Allen of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. The 27-year-old man was ordered out of the car at gunpoint, but ran away from the deputy when he was ordered to lay on the ground, Allen said.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department helicopter was called to find the man, and deputies formed a perimeter to prevent the man from escaping, Allen said.

The man fled to a residential area southwest of Canyon High School.

The man started jumping over several backyard fences, breaking one, as he tried to get away from authorities.

While he ran, the man allegedly broke into a home and changed the clothes he was wearing. But the helicopter continued to track the man, who was arrested by deputies at 3:25 p.m., Allen said.

Nobody was injured during the pursuit, he said.

The man was booked into the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on Monday and is facing several charges, including vehicle theft and residential burglary, Allen said.
