Two people driving in a stolen Ford F-250 pickup truck managed to flee from authorities Friday afternoon after driving the truck off an embankment at the Placerita Canyon Road onramp to southbound lanes of Highway 14, authorities said.

An officer attempted to pull the vehicle over for speeding at 3:20 p.m. when the driver drove toward the shoulder of the freeway and then off the embankment, California Highway Patrol Officer Michelle Esposito said.

The two suspects bailed from the vehicle and ran westbound across Sierra Highway south of Placerita Canyon, Esposito said.
They continued running into an open field with trees and heavy brush, she said.

To try to locate the two suspected car thieves, officers called in a K-9 unit, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department helicopter and reinforcements from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

Law enforcement set a containment area around where they thought the suspects fled by 3:49 p.m., she said.

But law enforcement was unable to find where the two people went and left the area at 4:54 p.m., Esposito said.

“We left the scene because we couldn’t find the suspects,” she said.
