Extend taxes for our children

I would like to comment on Tammy Marashlian’s article, “District braces for cuts” (March 21).

None of us like taxes, but we do want our children to have a good education. We want our streets to be free of potholes. We want our parks to be open when we’re on vacation.

Our schools are being decimated by cutbacks. Children are being forced into larger and larger classroom sizes. College-age youth are finding it very hard, sometimes impossible, to get the classes needed for their majors and graduation.

Children are the future of this country. When we deny our children, we also deny our leadership role in this increasingly competitive and global world.

Right now, the people of California have absolutely no say in regard to the tax extension Gov. Jerry Brown proposes. We may not even be given an opportunity to vote on it.

I hope our elected representatives, both Democrats and Republicans, can work together for a change and put the plan for this tax-extension on the ballot.

Then we can at least determine its outcome.
