Monte Van Fleet plays Lady Bracknell in The Upstart Crows’ “The Importance of Being Earnest.”

The Upstart Crows bring laughter to the SCV stage on March 25 with the opening of Oscar Wilde's hilarious play, "The Importance Of Being Earnest." The production, directed by Michael Davies, is a longtime favorite of audiences around the world and combines the genius of comedic situations with very witty dialogue. The cast, which handles the language of Wilde in a fresh and effortless way, includes many well loved local comedic actors: Kamber Moen, Kelly Bader, Fish, David Wisehart, Caroline Morgan, John Fortman, Mike Davies and in a sublime gender twist, the always terrific Monte Van Vleet as Lady Bracknell.

Oscar Wilde called "The Importance of Being Earnest" "a trivial comedy for serious people" more than 100 years ago, and while that may be true, the play still resonates with audiences today who find navigating social mores boggling. Wilde's timeless comedy of manners observes Algernon and Jack, a pair of English dandies whose fiancees have both agreed to marry them under the false belief that their first name is Ernest, which the women feel is "a name that inspires absolute confidence." What follows is a relentless series of complications, misunderstandings and revelations. The hilarity is contagious, and the audience will find its time well spent following the antics of these two Lotharios.

The Upstart Crows production of "The Importance of Being Earnest" will be held at The SCV Space March 25, 26, and 27, and April 1, 2 and 3, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. The SCV Space (661 263-3733), is located at 27600 Bouquet Canyon Road, Saugus, at the intersection of Haskell Canyon Road. Tickets are $15, ($12 seniors/students) and can be purchased online or at the door. Go to www.thescvspace.com for tickets/information.
