Alarcon Responds

I was stunned to read in Jim Holt's article (Feb. 19, 2008) that I endorsed the Las Lomas development. On the contrary, I have publicly opposed the project as it stands.

I introduced a motion to the L.A. City Council asking the developer to pay permit processing costs because the City Attorney has twice opined that the City is legally required to processes these permits and to not do so could put Los Angeles in a liability situation. My motion simply ensures that tax payers are not saddled with the processing costs.

Furthermore, anyone who has ever driven over the 5 or 14 freeways knows the gridlock that has been created due to the outrageous job/housing imbalance north of the City boundary. The massive Newhall Ranch project proves that the County will create housing without sufficient jobs and further burden our freeways and reduce our quality of life.

Right now the County has stated they are opposed to the Las Lomas project but what is to say they will not change their position and create another behemoth development without ample jobs? With the City of Los Angeles in control of the Las Lomas project we can ensure that if a project is approved it would have the mitigations necessary to protect our quality of life.
