A movie theater employee who beat a co-worker with a fire extinguisher is scheduled to go to court today, a sheriff’s official said.

Thomas Humphreys, 18 of Stevenson Ranch, assaulted a 20-year-old co-worker at the Edwards Cinema in the Valencia Town Center Tuesday afternoon, said Sgt. Darren Harris of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s station. Humphreys was on duty at the time of the assault, he said.

Humphreys watched the victim walk into the movie theater to catch a matinee, Harris said. Humphreys walked into the dark theater half-way through the movie and saw where the victim was seated, he said. Humphreys allegedly grabbed a wall-mounted fire extinguisher and confronted the victim. Witnesses told deputies the men exchanged verbal barbs before Humphreys peppered the victim with punches then smashed the fire extinguisher against the victim’s head, Harris said.

Movie patrons separated the two and pinned Humphreys to the ground until deputies arrived, Harris said. Deputies arrested Humphreys and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon. The victim was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital and treated for head lacerations and released, Harris said.

Humphreys told deputies he and the victim had a previous disagreement that instigated the fight. The victim told deputies he and Humphreys barely speak at work, Harris said.

Humphreys is being held in lieu of $30,000 bail. He is due in Santa Clarita Superior Court on today.
