Santa Clarita sisters, from left to right, Kristen, Kelly and Kasey Perkins created a business from an initial effort to protect their skin from ultraviolet sunrays and tanning beds. The young entrepreneurs created a mobile-tanning business at salons in Santa Monica and Valencia, and hope to open their own place within the year.

As the spring season quickly approaches and with it warmer weather, so does the trend of showing a little more skin. And with the exposure of more skin comes the urge for a glowing tan.

But before deciding to bake in the sun for hours to achieve the perfect bronze, consider a healthy alternative: Faking It Flawless custom airbrush tanning

The business was created by Kelly, Kasey and Kristen Perkins, three Santa Clarita Valley sisters who were looking for a healthier approach to tanning.

Health concerns
Kasey Perkins, who describes her skin and her sisters’ skin as being “pale as the snow,” was searching for a way to get the radiant glow of a traditional suntan without compromising their skin or health.

Former suntanners who were not willing to put their skin at risk anymore, the Perkinses decided to purchase their own airbrush tanning machine. By doing so, they could reap the benefits of a tan without the harsh side effects of the sun.
The Perkinses believe that skincare is something that many put on the back burner.

“Why take a chance on your skin,” Kristen Perkins said.

Aside from themselves, they soon began airbrush tanning their friends. That’s when they realized that they might have a business on their hands. It was really by accident, Kasey Perkins said.

Mobile service
The sisters started their business by becoming a mobile-tanning service. This meant they would show up at a location requested by their clients and they would airbrush tan their clients on the spot.

While Faking It Flawless still has the mobile service option, it is also now featured in two Los Angeles salons; The Doves Studio in Santa Monica, and Garrett Markenson Coiffure right here in Valencia. Garrett Markenson is another 20-something business owner in Santa Clarita.

Only in their 20s, the Perkins sisters are quite the entrepreneurs. They credit their father, who also runs his own business, as their inspiration for their business endeavors.

Before running Faking It Flawless, the young women held corporate-type jobs, but they always knew that they wanted to own their own business.

Kasey used to work in marketing, but now runs Faking It Flawless full-time. Her older sister Kelly still works in the pharmaceutical industry part-time, and Kristen is a stylist.

Natural, long lasting
Faking It Flawless prides itself in using a high-end tanning line Infinity Sun. This brand is popular amongst some of Hollywood’s celebrities such as Eva Longoria and Brooke Burke.

Knowing they wanted their airbrush tans to look natural, the Perkins’ searched for the “perfect” tanning solution product.

The Infinity Sun tanning line promises a natural-looking glow without the orange, patchy or streaky effects that are usually associated with faux tans. The tanning solution used is rich in antioxidants, has anti-aging components and is all natural.

The Perkinses wanted to ensure that their clients would be treated to the highest standards in sunless tanning. While most airbrush tans only last about 7 days, a Faking It Flawless tan can last up to 14 days.

“When we started our business, I really wanted to stray away from haphazard approaches to tanning,” Kasey Perkins said.
Faking It Flawless has only been in business for about a year but already has a loyal base of clientele.

Spring is just the beginning of their busy season, and although appointments do get booked quite fast, the girls always to make room for new appointments.

“We try to accommodate everybody’s schedule, and even if you call us last minute, we’ll really try and fit you (in),” Kasey Perkins said.

Future growth

What was once a self-centered idea is now a blossoming business for the Perkinses. In the near future, they hope to open up a small customer-oriented boutique for all of their client’s needs within the next year.
