Grandmothers and others are correct

In response to “Grandmothers plead council for peace,” March 14:

Bill Reynold’s snarky comment about grandmothers wearing burqas was totally uncalled for. This well-meaning group — which is actually titled “Grandmothers and Others for Peace” — continues to speak out to the SCV community about the utter futility of our engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan.

As a relatively new member of the group, I am proud to stand with them the first Sunday of each month at 3 p.m. on the corner of Valencia and McBean Parkway to witness to our belief that these wars are taking the lives of countless Americans and many others while doing nothing to protect us from terrorism.

Everyone knows that the real terrorist threat is safely ensconced in Pakistan, where we cannot touch it. Spending hundreds of billions of dollars and wasting thousands of lives in other places are not going to protect us from terrorist attacks.

Councilman Bob Kellar’s comments were completely off-base: Can anyone truthfully say that what we are doing in these faraway countries is going to keep some homegrown terrorist from attacking us? Of course not.

Rather, we are wasting our precious and limited resources overseas when we should be employing them here at home to improve the lives of our people and strengthen our homeland defenses.

The government needs to re-evaluate and revise its anti-terrorism policies and start over; they are clearly not working at present.

Each month, a handful of concerned citizens marches on a corner by the mall to let our fellow citizens know we stand against these needless foreign entanglements. Those who agree with us should come and join us on April 3, when next we gather to protest these ugly and unnecessary wars.
