A Saugus family defended their Great Dane on Tuesday, saying the dog did not attack an 8-pound Chihuahua or its owner last week.
Danielle Guezara, 19, said she was about to load her dog Edd into the family’s SUV on Wednesday.

When Edd saw Lisa Hall and her group of small dogs, he got excited and ran across the street.

What happened next depends on who you ask.

Guezara said Edd, who was not on a leash, ran across the street to play with the dogs and scared them.

“(Edd) is the most gentle thing ever. He just got excited when he saw a group of small dogs,” Guezara said. “He didn’t touch (the dogs) or knock the lady over. He ran over there to sniff (the dogs) out.”

Freddie, a Chihuahua, was so scared by Edd that he squirmed out of his collar and allegedly scurried into a storm drain, she said.

Firefighters and city workers tried to fetch Freddie from the storm drain to no avail. County animal control found Freddie the next day in a field a couple of blocks away.

Sticking to her original story, Hall said Tuesday that Edd ran across the street, knocked her to the ground and then picked Freddie up in his mouth and somehow forced him into the storm drain.

“I saw what I saw and I felt what I felt and I have the bruises on my leg to prove it,” Hall said.

When Freddie went missing, Guezara said she and her 15-year-old brother apologized, grabbed flashlights and started looking for Hall’s Chihuahua.

“I have little dogs,” Guezara said. “I know what it’s like to become attached to them. I felt sorry for (Hall) and for the whole situation.”

Hall said Tuesday she’s happy Freddie is safe and healthy.

But Hall said the fact remains that Edd was off of his leash.

“The (Great Dane) was not on a leash,” Hall said. “I’m saddened that they were in the wrong.”
