Caltrans announces road closures

Transportation: State will close lanes as part of $161-million project to add carpool option

The California Department of Transportation will close a handful of lanes on Interstate 5 and Highway 14 from Sunday through Friday as part of $161-million project to add carpool lanes and relieve congestion, officials said Friday.

Construction crews are working on an elevated two-lane direct carpool connector at the I-5 and Highway 14 interchange and construction of carpool lanes in both directions of the I-5 at the interchange.

Caltrans officials say the project will relieve congestion, improve traffic flow, enhance safety and improve traffic operations on both freeways at the interchange. Work began in July 2008 and is expected to finish in late 2012.

The following roads and lanes are affected:

Highway 14
Southbound Highway 14 truck route connector to northbound I-5: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.; southbound Highway 14 connector to southbound Interstate 5: 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.; southbound Highway 14 connector to northbound Interstate 5: 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.; southbound Highway 14 Railroad Ave. off-ramp: 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Interstate 5
Northbound truck route collector road: 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.; up to four lanes of northbound Interstate 5: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.; Sierra Highway on-ramp to northbound Interstate 5: 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; southbound truck route collector road: 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.; southbound Interstate 5 connector to northbound Highway 14: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.; up to three lanes of southbound Interstate 5: 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.; southbound Interstate 5 Balboa Boulevard off-ramp: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Interstate 210
Westbound Interstate 210 connector to northbound Interstate 5: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
