A man who intentionally drove off a cliff on Lake Hughes Road Friday and plummeted about 1,000 feet warned his mother that he was going to kill himself by jumping off a cliff near Castaic Lake, authorities said Saturday.

Family members from San Diego had reported the man missing and had mentioned that he intended to drive to Castaic Lake, said Lt. Robert Lewis of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The man’s name, age and the extent of his injuries were not available Saturday.

Authorities believe the man set himself on fire before driving over a cliff off Lake Hughes about two miles north of Dry Gulch Road and five miles east of Interstate 5. The man was taken by helicopter from the crash site to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center.

The man was found Friday morning after a person driving on Lake Hughes spotted a fire off the roadway.
