Saugus takes home Tri-City championship

Saugus girls volleyball won the Tri-City championship and stayed undefeated on the season, pulling out a five-set victory over Walnut on Saturday.

The Centruions won 25-21, 24-26, 25-18, 21-25, 15-10 at Ganesha High School in Pomona.

"Walnut was a very solid team," said Saugus head coach Zach Ambrose. "No one had more than a four-point lead the whole time."

Centurion hitter Katie Estes was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. She had 24 kills.

Jaclyn Clark added 19 kills, while Alyssa Terwall passed 49 assists for Saugus (9-0), who went 5-0 in the three-day tournament.

West Ranch loses four

For the first time in team history, the West Ranch High School girls volleyball team played in the rough-and-tumble Dave Mohs Tournament in Newport Beach.

The Wildcats were competitive in both of their matches they played Saturday, and both matches on Friday as well.

But they lost all four best-of-3 competitions.

West Ranch played Foothill League rival Valencia for the first time this season, losing 25-22, 25-23 at Newport Harbor High.

The Wildcats also lost a close one to Mission Viejo, 25-21, 27-25. On Friday at Corona del Mar, West Ranch was defeated by Santa Barbara, ranked No. 3 in Division I-A, 25-15, 25-19.

WHS also lost to Woodbridge, 25-20, 25-15.

Sophia Burns led the team in kills and in assists throughout the tournament. Allison Summers was another top hitter.
