A person whose car plummeted 1,000 feet off Lake Hughes Road about five miles east of Interstate 5 has been airlifted to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, authorities said.

It is not yet clear what caused the vehicle to plummet off the side of the road, said Inspector Matt Levesque of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The victim's gender and extent of his or her injuries was also not immediately available.

Fire fighters and California Highway Patrol officers have been at the scene of the crash since 11 a.m., he said.

A person driving along Lake Hughes Road spotted a fire near the road and called authorities for help at 10:33.
