COC parking an old problem

The Saturday article “Students put off by parking” sheds much light on College of the Canyons’ obvious parking problem.

It’s interesting that with all of COC’s recent expansion projects, apparently the school is not meeting parking-code requirements, neither does it seem the school is being forced to comply with them by the city’s Planning Division.

This certainly explains why COC students are routinely parking throughout adjacent neighborhoods, mainly the Valencia Summit.

Unfortunately, the article did not report that those expensive new bicycle lanes along Rockwell Canyon Road — COC’s main drag — are constantly and miserably underutilized. I’m certain that I’m not alone in believing our tax dollars are thoroughly wasted when used to install bicycle lanes along our automobile traffic corridors.

Not only that, it’s very dangerous, and painting stripes all over our streets adds to our city’s maintenance cost.

Furthermore, it would behoove our city leaders to allow parking along Rockwell Canyon Road rather than leave bicycle lanes there, since having adequate parking is the real need.

As most folks know, parking shortages such as COC’s are not a new problem in Santa Clarita.
