The city of Santa Clarita received the Award of Achievement from the California Park & Recreation Society for the Great American Campout event and the new Discovery Park.

The city will receive recognition at the 2011 California and Pacific Southwest Recreation and Park Training Conference.

The Great American Campout, awarded in the Health and Wellness category, attracted hundreds of campers to Central Park last year. The event returns on June 25 and offers residents the opportunity to spend a beautiful summer evening under the stars and experience the outdoors with fun activities for the whole family.

Space is limited and registration begins on Tuesday, Feb. 22. Register online at santa-clarita.com/campout.

In the Park Planning and Design Category, Discovery Park was specifically recognized for the park's unique features of integrating community needs while restoring ecological function to the land.

"We are honored that the California Park & Recreation Society has chosen to recognize this city's dedication to innovation and providing unique recreational experiences to our community," said Mayor Marsha McLean.

The California Park & Recreation Society is a membership organization with approximately 4,000 members representing 525 local parks and recreation agencies throughout the state and focuses on creating community through people, parks, and programs.
