The Santa Clarita Planning Commission adopted a resolution this week recommending the annexation of the Vista Canyon project site as part of the largest land annexation in city history.

In addition to the mixed-use development project’s annexation into the city, commissioners voted to recommend the annexation of a 2,257-acre tract of unincorporated land bordered by the Santa Clara River line to the north and stretching from Via Princessa and the Sierra Highway on the west to just past Sand Canyon Road on the east.

This unincorporated area includes the Fair Oaks Ranch and Jakes Way communities and about 915 acres of the Sand Canyon community that have not yet been annexed.

Plans for the Vista Canyon development feature 646,000 square feet of commercial office space, a 164,000 square-foot retail area and 1,091 residential units, according to a city staff report.

The planning commission voted 3-1 Tuesday night.

Commissioner Lisa Eichman voted against the move, citing concerns with its environmental report.

Commissioner Bill Kennedy was absent from the meeting.
