Melissa Brown, the 23-year-old woman accused of causing a fatal Fourth of July crash, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to one felony count of vehicular manslaughter at her arraignment in San Fernando Superior Court.

Brown's attorney said the accident was caused when an SUV crashed into Brown's sedan at the intersection of Mall Entrance and Valencia Boulevard.

The collision propelled Brown's sedan into a crowd of people watching a fireworks show above Westfield Valencia Town Center.

Matilde Garnica, 43, was killed instantly. Seven others, including her 12- and 13-year-old sons, were injured.
