Runner is clearly the best choice for Senate

I was surprised and disappointed on Sunday morning when I read The Signal’s endorsement for the special election in the 17th State Senate District.

Former Assemblywoman Sharon Runner is clearly the best choice to represent Santa Clarita in the state Senate.

The winner of the Feb. 15 special election will need to hit the ground running, as the state budget process for the current year is already in full swing.

Runner served on the Budget Committee and the Budget Subcommittee on Education. That is exactly the kind of experience we need in Sacramento.

A $25.4 billion budget deficit and a potential June special election that will involve potential tax increases calls for real leadership.

Runner understands what the people of Santa Clarita Valley expect when voting on these issues. She won’t cave to the special interests just to get along.

Runner has a history of success in California state policy. When the politicians in Sacramento refused to protect our children by passing tougher sexual predator laws, she went to the people. That effort, called “Jessica’s Law,” was overwhelmingly adopted by the people of California with 70 percent of the vote statewide.

As taxpayers, we can’t afford to elect someone with zero experience to trim an $80 billion general fund budget. Runner has managed budgets in the private sector and she understands the intricacies of public budgeting.

My family is strongly supporting Runner for state Senate because it is the smart choice.
