Ground attack grants SCCS football win

Running back Keoshian runs for 253 yards and five touchdowns in Cardinals romp

Santa Clarita Christian beat Trona, 59-20, in its football season opener Friday night in Trona.

The Cardinals led at the half, 30-16.

SCC running back Collin Keoshian carried the ball 25 times for 253 yards and five touchdowns in the eight-man football game.

Quarterback Steven Borden was a dual threat, passing the football for 104 yards on 6-of-9 passing and one 36-yard touchdown to Colin Mayhugh. Borden had 54 rushing yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns.

Keoshian also led the way on defense with an interception and 11 tackles. Borden had nine tackles.

Daniel Chaplin tackled eight ball carriers and recovered a fumble.

Centurions shatter record
The Saugus girls cross country team broke its own record at the 19th annual Kiwanis Seaside Invitational on Saturday at Buenaventura State Beach.

The Lady Centurions set an unofficial course record of 87 minutes, 33 seconds.

They broke the course record of 89:18 set last season.

Due to a computer malfunction Saturday, there were no official results.

The Seaside Invitational was divided into all four high school classes.

Kaylin Mahoney was the overall champion, with a time of 17 minutes, 6 seconds. Brianna Jauregui was the senior champion (17:32). Amber Murakami won the junior race (17:46).

Brandon Jauregui of Saugus (15:02) was the top boys runner for the Centurions. Alec Nelson was the junior leader (15:07).

For Canyon High School, Anthony Pizzo led the way for the boys (15:15). Timmy McGuan (15:55) followed him, and Timmy Gonzalez (16:23) was the fastest Cowboys sophomore.

Saugus girls volleyball
The Centurions swept LA Baptist (25-18, 25-11, 25-8) on Monday night. Katie Estes finished with 12 kills while Alyssa Terwall had 18 assists.

Saugus, 3-0, will play Bell Jeff today.

Saugus varsity tennis
Saugus defeated Alemany 10-8 on Monday. Doubles players Ashley Frederick and Amanda Keller swept all three of their matches 6-4, 6-1, 6-1. Kristyn Brainard, Chelby Johnson, Kim Gordan and Michelle Endo each won two sets.

Valencia girls tennis
The Vikings defeated Notre Dame 12-6 at the Breamar Country Club on Monday.

Senior Thalia Wilczynski swept all three of her sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1.

Emily Fraczek also swept, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3.

On the doubles side, Amanda Jansson and Kirstie Kwock won two of their three sets, 6-1, 6-2, 4-6.

Saugus JV tennis
In the junior varisty match, Saugus was also victorious, routing Alemany 10-8.

Esther Cho swept all three of her sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.

West Ranch v-ball
The West Ranch freshman girls volleyball season played in the Santa Paula Cardinals Volleyball Classic on Saturday.

In pool play, they outscored their opponents, 150-76, earning them a third seed in the competition.

West Ranch beat No. 7 St. Bonaventure, 25-12.

They lost to the No. 1 seed Buenaventura, 25-19, in the semifinals.

Freshman Kelly Spurling, Brooke Stice and Allison Matern led the team in points on serve.

Middle blockers Angel Rutledge and Stice were strong along the net, blocking several shots.

Kelly Spurling was solid in setting the ball to outside hitters Kelsey Sellars and Matern.
